E-book sales overtake print for first time

This year for Christmas, a lot of book lovers were unwrapping e-readers instead of new hardcovers and classic paperbacks. The Amazon Kindle, with its new design and lower price, was one of the hottest gifts on the market this year, proving that more and more readers are going digital.
And according to this article from The Guardian, Amazon's e-book sales trumped their print sales for the first time ever on Christmas day this year.
The online retailer had a goal of selling 500,000 of the devices before year end. Due to the Christmas gift rush, it looks like those figures might be on target. However, Amazon has refused to release sales numbers since the Kindle was first introduced in 2007.
This seems like a pretty historic moment for the e-reading industry. Although I have no doubt that print books will continue to be published and sold, it looks like more readers are becoming comfortable with electronic devices and book downloads. Soon, e-readers might be as common as iPods and mp3 players.
